Debate Better Pty Ltd runs this website to tell families about our online debating classes and to let you get in touch. We are a small business operator under section 6D of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and have not opted in under section 6EA, so the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) do not apply to us as law, and the OAIC cannot hear a complaint about us.

If you go on to enrol, a fuller Families Privacy Policy becomes a term of your Enrolment Terms and governs your child’s information. This page is about your use of the website.

This policy covers this website — debatebetter.au — and any enquiry you send us through it. It does not cover what happens to a student’s information once they’re enrolled: that is handled by the Families Privacy Policy that forms part of the Enrolment Terms.

• When you send an enquiry: the details our enquiry form asks for — your name, your email, your phone number, your child’s year level, and your message.
• When you browse: our host records standard web-server logs (your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you request and the time), and our analytics and advertising tools set cookies that record how you use the site — the pages you view, roughly where you are, and how you arrived. Section 4 lists these and how to turn them off.
• Only what we need. We collect your enquiry details directly from you (the APP 3 standard). Browsing and usage data is collected through the cookies and services in section 4.

This website uses cookies and similar technologies for two things: understanding how the site is used, and measuring and running our advertising.

• Analytics — Google Analytics. To see which pages are useful and how people move through the site, so we can improve it. It records things like the pages you view, your approximate location, and how you arrived.
• Advertising — Google Ads and the Meta (Facebook) pixel. To measure our ads and show DebateBetter ads to people who have visited the site. These set cookies and share some data — such as your IP address, the pages you view, and when you submit an enquiry — with Google and Meta.
• Forms — Jotform. Our Contact and Programs pages embed forms from Jotform. Loading those pages contacts Jotform, which may set its own cookies, and submitting a form sends Jotform what you enter.

Turning them off. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s browser add-on, and adjust ad personalisation in your Google and Meta account settings. Turning cookies off won’t stop you using the site.

We don’t sell your personal information or hand it to data brokers.

• To reply. We use your enquiry to answer you and to send you what you asked about — a program or a class.
• To improve and promote the site. We use analytics to understand how the site is used, and advertising tools to measure our ads and reach families who might be interested, as described in section 4.
• We don’t sell your information. We don’t sell or trade your personal information, and we won’t add you to an email marketing list you didn’t ask to join.

Our host and forms provider process data only for us. Our analytics and advertising providers process it under their own terms, which you can read on their sites.

Beyond these providers, we don’t sell your information or hand it to data brokers — the sharing above is limited to running the site, our forms, analytics and advertising.

Our providers above — our host (Vercel), our forms (Jotform), and our analytics and advertising tools (Google and Meta) — are based in the United States, so the information in section 6 is stored or processed outside Australia. We choose established providers with recognised security practices, and keep what we send them to the minimum each task needs.

• The site is served only over HTTPS, so what you send us is encrypted in transit.
• We hold only what you send us, access it on a need-to-know basis, and don’t copy it anywhere it doesn’t need to be.
• If a breach ever occurred that could put you at real risk of harm, we would tell you promptly — applying the standard of the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme as our commitment, even though the scheme does not bind us.

• Enquiries: we keep your enquiry — in our Jotform account and in email — while we’re helping you and for up to 12 months afterwards, then delete it from both, unless you enrol, in which case it moves under the Families Privacy Policy’s retention rules.
• Server logs: access logs are held by our host under its own retention and rotated out in the ordinary course.
• Analytics and advertising data: held by Google and Meta under their own retention and controls; you can clear it through your browser and their account settings.
• On request: ask us to delete an enquiry you’ve sent and we will, unless we need to keep it to meet a legal obligation.

This website is written for parents and carers — it’s where you read about our classes and get in touch. We don’t ask children to enter personal information here, and we don’t knowingly collect it from a child through the website. A student’s own information is collected at enrolment, by a parent, under the Families Privacy Policy.

• Access and correction (the APP 12 and 13 standards): ask and we’ll tell you what we hold about you and correct anything inaccurate, within a reasonable time.
• Deletion: ask us to delete an enquiry you’ve sent and we will, subject to any legal obligation to keep it.
• Complaints: raise it with us first at admin@debatebetter.au and we’ll work it through with you. Because the Privacy Act does not apply to us, the OAIC cannot take a complaint about us; for a consumer dispute you can contact NSW Fair Trading.
